Customer reviews

They trust us

Since 2010, Taxi Arganier has run your Atlas day trips with 800+ 5/5 reviews (Google, TripAdvisor, Trustpilot), a fixed price and an English-speaking driver.

Why choose Taxi Arganier for your 3 Valleys tour?

A loop circuit, 3 landscapes in 1 day

Lalla Takerkoust lake, the Kik Plateau and the Ourika waterfalls: three contrasting moods — mineral, panoramic and lush green — without ever driving the same road twice. A programme that only a private taxi can deliver at your own pace.

Tea with a Berber family (on request)

On request, your driver invites you into an Amazigh home on the Kik Plateau or in the foothills of Asni: freshly brewed mint tea, wood-oven flatbread and genuine conversation far off the tourist trail.

Kik Plateau panorama, the must-see photo spot

At around 1,500 m of altitude, the Kik Plateau unfolds a unique scene: terraced olive groves, the snow-capped ridges of the High Atlas in the background and absolute silence. The most photographed viewpoint on the circuit — and one often skipped by group guided tours.

Never back along the same road

The full loop (R203 → P2010 → P2017) is roughly 100 km and guarantees a seamless experience: every kilometre of the return trip reveals a fresh landscape, from argan trees to the olive groves of the Ourika Valley.

About the tour

3 Valleys of the Atlas: Lalla Takerkoust, Asni & Ourika in a single day

The 3 Valleys circuit from Marrakech is a 100 to 110 km loop that links three moods of the western High Atlas in a single day: the blue-green sheet of the Lalla Takerkoust dam, the terraces and panoramas of the Kik Plateau above Asni, then the descent into the Ourika Valley down to the Berber villages of Tahanaout and Setti Fatma. Each leg has its own character — mineral, pastoral, lively — and the transitions between them are as beautiful as the sites themselves.

Unlike the classic Ourika day trip, which you can reach by shared bus, the 3 Valleys loop requires a private vehicle: the three valleys converge on secondary roads (R203, P2010, P2017) not served by public transport, and the programme involves several stops that don't fit into a group minibus tour. A private taxi gives you the freedom to pause on the Kik Plateau for the morning light, to linger over tea with a local family or to shift lunch in the Ourika depending on your mood.

01

Lalla Takerkoust Dam

Built between 1929 and 1935 on the N'Fis River, the Lalla Takerkoust dam is the first major stop on the circuit, about 35 km south-west of Marrakech. Its man-made lake stretches over several kilometres in a setting of bare ochre hills, dotted with tamarisk and reeds. In the early morning, the low-angled light turns the surface of the water into a bronzed mirror. Local operators offer paddleboarding and jet skiing — an option to mention to your driver if you'd like to book a slot. At the water's edge, a few terraces serve argan coffee and Berber pancakes: the ideal break before heading up to the plateau.

02

Kik Plateau & Asni Valley

After Lalla Takerkoust, the P2010 road climbs towards the Kik Plateau, at around 1,500 m of altitude. The landscape shifts: gone are the mineral reliefs, replaced by centuries-old terraced olive groves and meadows where pack mules graze. On a clear day, the High Atlas range spreads across 180° — Toubkal (4,167 m) stands out in the distance. This is the circuit's iconic photographic viewpoint, still spared from the crowds. Heading down to Asni, you cross a bustling agricultural crossroads: if you pass through on a Saturday, the weekly souk of this small town fills the streets with colour and scent — spices, dyed wool, mules laden with vegetables. To go further towards the roof of Africa, our Imlil day trip sets off from this very point.

03

Tahanaout & the Ourika Valley

At the Tahanaout junction, the road drops down into the Ourika Valley via the P2017. The Ourika River soon appears, lined with willows and terraced gardens irrigated by seguias. The villages rise in tiers up the slopes, built of pinkish pisé and reinforced with black schist arches — a striking contrast with the bare rock of the plateau. From lunchtime, the Berber inns serve lamb tagines with garden vegetables on terraces overlooking the river, a recommended stop before climbing up to Setti Fatma and, depending on the season, its waterfalls reachable on foot in 20 minutes. For a full focus on this valley, see our Ourika day trip.

04

Berber villages & tea with a local family

All along the loop, the Amazigh villages of the western High Atlas have kept their pisé architecture, their narrow alleys and their slow pace. On request, your driver Mohamed arranges a stop with a family on the Kik Plateau or the Asni hillside: mint tea is poured in three rounds — the first bitter as life, the second sweet as love, the third light as death, as the saying goes. No entrance ticket or set price, just a courteous gesture (a few dirhams or a box of tea offered as a gift). It's often the moment travellers remember longest after they return home.

Itinerary, practical tips and ideas to make the most of your 3 Valleys tour.

Sample programme (8 a.m. departure)

HeureÉtape
08:00Departure from your Marrakech hotel
09:00Arrival at Lalla Takerkoust dam — lakeside stroll, coffee
10:00Climb up to the Kik Plateau — panorama stop, photos
11:30Descent towards Asni — souk break (Saturday) or Berber village
13:30Lunch in an inn in the Ourika Valley
15:00Up the Ourika towards Setti Fatma (optional waterfall walk)
17:00–17:30Return to Marrakech by the direct road (R203)

Practical tips

  • Clothing: the Kik Plateau can be cool even in summer (–10 °C compared with Marrakech); bring a light jacket even in July.
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen are essential: the glare off the lake and the heights is strong.
  • Footwear: light trainers are enough for the village paths; there's no need for hiking boots on this circuit.
  • Cash: the inns and traders at the Asni souk don't take cards.
  • Setti Fatma waterfalls: the flow varies greatly by season — impressive in winter and spring, modest in August-September.

Possible variations

  • Add the Setti Fatma waterfalls (+ 1 h): doable on the 10-hour package, ideal in spring (abundant water, lush vegetation).
  • Add Imlil: not recommended combined with the 3 Valleys in a single day — the timing is too tight to enjoy it. Go for our dedicated Imlil day trip instead.
  • Nearby desert alternative: if you're after a more arid, mineral landscape, the Agafay desert is an excellent day alternative, without the Atlas.

Experiencing the 3 Valleys of the Atlas from Marrakech

A tailor-made day trip from Marrakech, at your own pace, with a dedicated driver.

Marrakech is one of the few starting points in the world where, in under an hour, you go from the medieval medina to a colonial-era dam reflecting snow-capped peaks. The red city is an ideal springboard for the 3 Valleys day trip: traffic flows freely heading south from 7.30 a.m., and the Atlas roads are accessible all year round — even in January, when snow blankets the Kik Plateau and the Ourika waterfalls swell. Our fleet sets off from any hotel, riad or apartment in Marrakech, with no surcharge for the Gueliz, Hivernage or medina districts.

The circuit is designed as a reading of the western High Atlas from west to east: you head out to the furthest point first (Lalla Takerkoust, 35 km SW) to enjoy the morning light on the lake, climb in altitude for the day's panorama (Kik Plateau, 11 a.m.–12 p.m.), then descend for lunch in the cool of the Ourika before returning by the direct road. This direction of travel avoids driving into the sun and maximises the golden hours for photos.

3 Valleys of the Atlas loop from Marrakech — Lalla Takerkoust lake, Berber village and the Kik Plateau at s
3 Valleys

Many Marrakech visitors hesitate between the classic Ourika day trip and the 3 Valleys circuit. The difference is simple: the Ourika alone is an out-and-back on a single road (R204) with one ecosystem (river, waterfalls, palm groves); the 3 Valleys form a full loop and string together three distinct moods. For a first stay in the High Atlas, the 3 Valleys circuit offers a far more complete picture of the region's diversity. Check our day trips from Marrakech page to compare all the available packages.

For families, the 3 Valleys have the advantage of never doubling back: children never see the same landscape twice, and the stops (lake, souk, lunch) punctuate the day with a natural rhythm. The late-afternoon return by the direct road leaves time for a hammam or a dinner in the medina before 8 p.m.

3 Valleys

The 3 Valleys circuit from Marrakech links three complementary geographic areas of the western High Atlas. Lalla Takerkoust is a man-made dam built between 1929 and 1935 on the N'Fis River, 35 km south-west of Marrakech: its reservoir lake is the starting point of the circuit. From there, the P2010 road climbs towards the Kik Plateau (around 1,500 m of altitude), an open panorama onto the High Atlas range, then drops back down to Asni and its famous Saturday souk. Tahanaout, an agricultural crossroads at the midpoint, marks the entrance to the Ourika Valley — a river lined with pisé villages and irrigated gardens that leads up to Setti Fatma and its waterfalls at the end of the track.

The full loop (R203, P2010, P2017) measures 100 to 110 km and takes around 4 hours of actual driving, plus the stops. A private taxi is the only practical way to do this loop, with no public transport connection between the three valleys.

FAQ — 3 Valleys day trip from Marrakech

The price of the 3 Valleys day trip from Marrakech starts at €36 per person for a group of 5 to 7 travellers, and €55 per person for 4 (that is €220 for the vehicle in a sedan, €255 in a minivan, full-day round trip circuit). Beyond 7 people, a custom quote is available within 2 h. All rates are fixed and include fuel, tolls and the French-speaking driver; tea with a local family and lunch are paid on site.

The "3 Valleys from Marrakech" circuit brings together: the N'Fis River valley (Lalla Takerkoust lake), the Asni valley (Kik Plateau, Saturday souk) and the Ourika Valley (Ourika River, Tahanaout, Setti Fatma). These three valleys of the western High Atlas form a continuous loop of 100 to 110 km from Marrakech.

The standard duration is 8 to 10 hours depending on the stops chosen. An 8 a.m. departure from Marrakech allows you to be back before 5.30-6 p.m. The package with the Setti Fatma waterfalls can last up to 10 h. Actual driving accounts for around 4 hours; the rest of the time is spent on visits and lunch.

Yes, and it's even strongly recommended! The weekly Asni souk is held every Saturday morning and gathers Berber farmers from the neighbouring valleys: spices, dyed wools, animals, mountain vegetables. If your day trip falls on a Saturday, let your driver know at booking so you stop at the right moment — usually between 10.30 a.m. and 12 p.m.

Yes. Local operators offer paddleboarding and jet skiing on Lalla Takerkoust lake, available depending on the season (mainly April-October). These activities are organised on site and are paid (around 100-200 DH). If you're interested, let your driver know at booking to plan a long enough stop (45 min to 1 h).

The traditional welcome in a Berber family on the Kik Plateau or in Asni is free in the strict sense, but it's customary to leave a few dirhams as a thank-you or to offer tea or biscuits bought along the way. Your driver was born in the region and personally knows several host families — authenticity is guaranteed, with no touristy staging.

The Ourika day trip alone is an out-and-back on the R204 road focusing on the river, the villages and the Setti Fatma waterfalls (6-7 h). The 3 Valleys circuit is a full loop (8-10 h) that additionally includes Lalla Takerkoust lake and the Kik Plateau panorama. If it's your first stay in the High Atlas, the 3 Valleys offer a far more complete overview of the landscape's diversity. If you've already done the loop, the Ourika alone lets you linger longer on the hike up to the waterfalls.

Absolutely. The loop involves no compulsory hiking: everything is done by car, with chosen stops. Baby seats are available free of charge. The stop at Lalla Takerkoust lake (beach and lawn at the water's edge), the terrace lunch over the Ourika and the visit to a Berber village generally please children a lot. The only caveat: the altitude of the Kik Plateau (1,500 m) can cause slight tiredness in little ones who aren't used to it.

Yes, that's the "3 Valleys + Setti Fatma waterfalls combo" package (~10 h). You must set off at 7.30-8 a.m. from Marrakech and limit long photo stops. The walk on foot to the waterfalls from Setti Fatma takes about 40 minutes round trip. This package is ideal in spring (abundant water, long light) but feasible in any season.

The circuit is doable all year round, but each season has its own magic. Spring (March-May): maximum green vegetation, abundant waterfalls, almond and argan trees in blossom — the favourite season of photographers. Autumn (September-November): golden light, fewer crowds, ideal temperatures. Winter: the Kik Plateau can be snow-covered (spectacular but bring warm clothes). Summer: hot in Marrakech, but the altitude cools things by –10 °C on the plateau — the circuit stays pleasant if you leave early.
