Book Taxi Essaouira

Essaouira saw its current foundation in 1760 with Sultan Mohammed ben Abdallah. The sultan assigned the design of the city to the military architect Théodore Cornut, who created a modern European-style city, with a large central avenue with arcades and cross streets, all enclosed within a mighty wall. The city owes its current name to its perfectly regular plan, which means “designed labien”.

Once built, Essaouira continued to grow and experienced exceptional development, becoming the country's most important commercial port, but also its diplomatic capital between the end of the 17th century and the beginning of the 19th century. With the establishment of the French protectorate and the development of other ports, it found itself at the beginning of the 20th century on the edge of the maritime routes, but it has rapidly developed over the last fifty years thanks to tourism and its strong cultural and musical valence.

Essaouira (formerly called "Mogador" by the Portuguese), is also called "The bride of the Atlantic". With its whitewashed houses and blue shutters, perched on a rocky promontory, it seems to embrace the waves of the ocean.

Since 2001, its medina, the old historic center, has been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In the alleys of the souk and in the craft shops, it is possible to buy products of all kinds, from silver jewelry to fabrics, carpets, spices, ointments, perfumes or ornaments carved in wood. . Essaouira is the cradle of Gnaoua music, the music that comes from black slaves brought from Africa in the 18th century, when the city was the port where slaves embarked for the Portuguese colonies. Every year in June, around the second week, the city of Essaouira hosts the International Festival of Gnaoua Music and World Music.

Not to be missed in Essaouira:
• women's cooperatives dedicated to the processing of the precious Argan oil
• the walk on the old ramparts at the top of the Skala de la Ville
• the workshops of lumberjacks and marketers who work with Thuya wood
• fresh fish you can choose and grill it instantly
• the port and maritime area with traditional wooden fishing boats
• the city's main beach, south of the medina, which stretches for several kilometers
• the mellah, the old Jewish quarter
• the souk with its Spice Market and the Jewelers Souk
