Agafay desert: a day trip from Marrakech reachable in 45 minutes
The Agafay desert is a hammada — a vast desert of stone and arid hills — located just 30 to 45 km southwest of Marrakech. Unlike the classic image of the Sahara with its great golden dunes, Agafay offers a unique mineral landscape: ochre-coloured plateaus, jagged ridges and an immense sky, with the snow-capped Atlas as a backdrop. It is the most accessible desert trip from the ochre city.
Many travellers confuse it with Merzouga and Erg Chebbi. Those Saharan dunes are magnificent, but they require at least two days of driving (≈ 560 km). Agafay, on the other hand, can be visited in a half-day or a full day, departing from your riad in the morning or in the late afternoon for sunset. It is the Moroccan desert within reach of a three-night stay in Marrakech.

The road to Agafay
The road from Marrakech first follows the southern exit towards Tahanaout, then branches off towards the Lalla Takerkoust dam. In about forty minutes, the landscape gradually transforms: the last olive trees give way to mineral expanses dotted with isolated jujube and argan trees. You sometimes spot herds of black goats led by Berber shepherds — the first sign that the hammada is beginning.
The Kik plateau dominates the horizon to the west; to the northeast, the wall of the Atlas takes shape, still covered in snow from November to April. This 45 km corridor is in itself a unique sensory transition between the ochre city and the mineral silence of Agafay.

Once at the camp, the possibilities are plentiful. The Agafay camel ride — between 20 and 40 minutes depending on the route — remains the iconic experience: riding a camel at walking pace, facing the stone hills, is a powerful memory for adults and children alike. For thrill seekers, the Agafay quad bike and buggy let you roam the hammada's tracks. Five kilometres away, the Lalla Takerkoust lake offers paddleboarding and kayaking for an unexpected desert-and-water combination.

Sunset & Berber dinner
This is the highlight of the Agafay day trip from Marrakech: around 6:30–7:30 pm (depending on the season), the sun dips behind the Kik plateau and bathes the hammada in an incomparable coppery light. From a camp terrace, the moment is silent, almost solemn.
The Berber dinner that follows takes place under a caïdal tent — a large ceremonial tent with colourful embroidery. On the menu: harira, briouates, méchoui or lamb tagine, couscous and milk pastilla. The evening often comes alive with Gnaoua musicians. Mint tea served endlessly. Return to Marrakech around 9:30–10:00 pm, in total silence, under a starry sky untouched by the city's light pollution.

- Water: the camp provides it, but a personal bottle is handy for the walks.
- Sunscreen SPF 50+: the glare on the hammada is intense, even in winter.
- Chèche or scarf: protects from wind and dust during quad biking or camel rides.
- Sweater or light jacket: Agafay nights are cool from October; in January, expect 8–12 °C after 9 pm.
- Closed shoes: sandals are not recommended on quad tracks or the stony ground.

Rescheduling: Any reschedule requested more than 24 h before the planned date is handled at no cost or penalty. We find a new available slot within the following 48 h according to your programme.
