Nous avons fait plusieurs trajets avec Taxi Arganier pendant notre séjour (notamment entre Marrakech et Essaouira) et à chaque fois les chauffeurs étaient bien à l'heure et super aimables. Ouarzazate & Aït Ben Haddou: Moroccan Hollywood 4 hours from Marrakech
200 km south of Marrakech along the N9 road, Ouarzazate alone packs in several centuries of Berber history, an earthen architecture that has survived both earthquakes and sultans, and — since the 1960s — the cameras of the world's greatest directors. Lawrence of Arabia set up its sets here in 1962; Ridley Scott filmed Gladiator here in 2000; the Game of Thrones crews returned between 2014 and 2019. The region owes its nickname of "Moroccan Hollywood" to its Atlas Studios, among the largest film sets on the African continent. 20 km before the town, the ksar of Aït Ben Haddou — a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 — sets its ochre earthen towers on a rocky spur like a film set born before cinema itself.
Choosing a private Arganier taxi over a tourist bus is first and foremost a question of pace. The Tichka road is no motorway: its switchbacks deserve photo stops, its viewpoints are earned by switching off the engine. The Marrakech → Ouarzazate route via the Tizi N'Tichka
The N9 highway leaves Marrakech towards the south-east and starts climbing as early as Ait Ourir. Over 105 km, it reaches the Tizi N'Tichka pass at 2,260 m of altitude — the highest point of the road and one of the most photographed mountain crossings in Morocco. Hairpins follow one another against a backdrop of grey and ochre rock faces, with 180° panoramas over the northern slope of the Atlas. The descent towards Ouarzazate, on the Drâa-Tafilalet side, gradually reveals the colours of the pre-desert: red earth, palm groves, the first earthen ksour. Allow 4 hours for this drive with one or two stops.

Aït Ben Haddou, a thousand-year-old UNESCO-listed ksar
The ksar of Aït Ben Haddou is one of the best-preserved examples of the defensive architecture of the Drâa Valley. Its ksour — tower houses built of rammed earth and palm wood — stack up the hillside in a composition that photographers leave only reluctantly. UNESCO gave it its seal in 1987 for the very same reason as the filmmakers: a kind of timelessness that crosses the centuries without visually deteriorating. Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, Game of Thrones, Babel, The Jewel of the Nile, Kundun, Kingdom of Heaven — the list of films shot here is longer than that of most Hollywood studios.

Ouarzazate: Taourirt kasbah and Atlas Studios
The Taourirt kasbah, the historic heart of Ouarzazate, was the main residence of the Glaoui family before Moroccan independence. Its zellige galleries and stucco patios give a sense of the power of this Berber clan that controlled the southern trade routes. A few kilometres away, the Atlas Studios sprawl over several hectares of reconstructed sets: Egyptian temples, medieval streets, miniature deserts. The site is open to the public — allow an hour to walk around it. The CLA Studios, the town's second complex, regularly host international productions.

Extensions: Skoura, Roses, Merzouga
Ouarzazate is not an end of the line — it's a gateway. 40 km to the east, the Skoura palm grove shelters abandoned kasbahs and shaded trails perfect for a sunrise. 90 km away, the Valley of Roses (Kelaa M'Gouna) bursts into colour every May for the rosa centifolia harvest. Further still, 360 km away, Merzouga and the dunes of Erg Chebbi make up the classic Sahara leg — but this requires a second day of driving from Ouarzazate. Plan to set off before 7 a.m. for a full day — the Tichka pass is reached in under 2 hours from Marrakech, but the traffic on the way out of the city eats up time in high season. A chèche or a light scarf comes in handy: even in summer, the 4 °C felt at the pass surprises travellers in shorts. Bring some snacks and water — café stops on the N9 are scarce and often packed in July and August. In winter (December–February), the pass can be icy in the morning; our vehicles are equipped accordingly and we adjust schedules if necessary.
